a criminal background children. we have a piece at the nation.com by our washington reporter which raises the question of whether the nra is really there for gun owners or for manufacturers. it speaks a little to what ben was saying. that they represent and lobby for these gun companies, which are feeling the heat and one hopes that the 2005 law which shielded gun companies from liability regarding gun violence, is looked at very hard. i think the key thing, and joe palafano, the chief domestic policy advisor spoke of in the wake of the tragedies of 1968 the assassination of martin luther king, of bobby kennedy, that johnson and palaphano knew that time is of the essence, and i think that's made even more starkly in light of what we now know about the nra's strategy in the wake of tragedy after tragedy, columbine, virginia, aurora, now. i'm hoping that the political will is strong because the time for meaningful conversation will be with us forever, but the time for political action is now. >> karen, peggy noonan is advocating much the same, actually, in the "wall street journal" saying d

home. bob orr is in washington with more on the investigation. good evening, bob. >> reporter: good evening, jim. as new details emerge, the scope of the horror explains. gunman adam lanza apparently sprayed two classrooms at sandy hook elementary school with relentless fire from a semiautomatic assault rifle. it was a massacre, and most of the victims were first graders. autopsies on the bodies of the children revealed that many, if not all, had been shot multiple times. wayne carver is the chief medical examiner for connecticut. >> i only did seven of the autopsies. the victims i had ranged from 3 to 11 wounds apiece and i only saw two of them with close-range shooting. >> reporter: investigators believe most of the bullets came from a bushmaster 223 assault rifle. it was one of four guns adam lanza took from the home he shared with his mother after he shot and killed her. sources say he left one gun in his car and then forced his way into the school, carrying the assault rifle in his hands and two semiautomatic pistols in the dark military-style cargo pants he was wearing. inside

as we go throughout connecticut, georgia, california, washington state. i mean, it is really a powerful, powerful thing to process. >> and we know that even, obviously, people who are most directly involved are going to having the highest impact and greatest impact on them. but, yeah, you are right. the people more remote that have been watching it, learning about it, talking about it, there have been studies on this and find that there is a component of post-traumatic stress even in those populations. we are talking about children here. we typically think about post-traumatic stress in adults. but even after virginia tech, for example, after a few months later, 15% of people who were involved -- went to colleges, who -- watched this very closely, still had some component of it. 77% of students at virginia tech had it. obviously much higher in the people most -- >> 77%? >> three to four months later. it is significant. there's a couple of things to keep in mind. one is that the quicker some of those symptoms and signs are recognized and dealt with, the much better prognosis people have.

washington, d.c., psychiatrist dr. josh weiner. dr. weiner, i want to start with something that we've been talking about off and on throughout the past couple of hours here. gun control, obviously that is going to be a discussion that is had in washington, d.c., hopefully over the next few weeks and months. but mental health in this country is not a topic that is discussed in public, at least, a great deal. how much of the conversation should be centered on that? >> to me, i think the conversation should actually start with focusing on the mental health aspect. if you want to fight crime and you want to fight the use of guns and violence, you need to start by mental health treatment. you need to improve the access to care that a lot of people have. you need to take a look at what's happening with some of the laws surrounding the difficulty with getting people who really need treatment, getting them the treatment is very difficult for somebody in this country to be mandated, once they're over the age of 18, to get mental health treatment. i see this in my practice. i see some people who are

with a hammer, so say the police. according to the washington post, the shooter had no social media profile. one former classmate said he had been home schooled for a time before attending the local high school. but, again, the investigation to the shooter is on going and a complete profile may not emerge for days or weeks yet. investigators hope to learn as much as they can by learning of the survivors of the massacre. today, we learned that two adults survived friday's shooting instead of the one that was previously reported. also, contrary to some earlier reports, a state police spokesperson says the shooter had no connection to the school either to his mother or to himself. sandy hook elementary school is closed indefinitely. school officials say it's unclear if the school will ever reopen. moving trucks were seen outside the school this morning. moving furniture and supplies to a vacant school in a neighboring town. in newtown today, the first two funerals for victims, both of them 6-year-old boys, noah pozner and jack pinto. jack was buried in a new york giants football jersey. victor cruz

about the shooter and what he did in the days before the attack. nbc's pete williams is in washington. pete with a good day, what have you learned? >> reporter: alex, the connecticut authorities have not yet formally identified the gunman, but we're been told and i think it's widely known it's adam lanza is his name, 20 years old who was living with his mother. they say the shooting actually began that morning about three miles from the school at the home where he was living with his mother, that he shot her then drove her car to the school. now we're told that he had actually four handguns when he entered the school. we had known about the first two. they say there were two others that were found. and then he also had a rifle that was not brought into the school we're told by several officials, that it was left in the car, and that all these weapons were legally purchased by his parents. although officials say on tuesday of this past week adam lanza went to a sporting goods store in connecticut and tried to buy a rifle but was turned down for various reasons, because of the connectic

jansing. she has been in newtown yesterday. according to "the washington post," six of the welfare deadliest mass shootings in this country's history had happened since 2007. i will start with a simple question here. why are these shootings taking even more victims it seems? >> well, they are taking more victims, number one, because we see shooters using semiautomatic weapons. most of the time you look at the mass shootings, probably in the last 15 to 30 years, it is either semiautomatic pistols, which normally have about 15, 16 rounds or high capacity. they could have 20 or they use assault rifles which, again, have 2035 rounds. so the shooters are going in and they are better armed and have high capacity weapons and they are obviously shooting to kill. in this case, the most innocent of those what do some of the shooters -- what are some of the traits they all have in common? >> well, you know, recently -- first of all, i want to be very quick to say we can't put everybody in the same pot. we can't lump them all together. we can't say they are all sociopaths, psychopaths. we can'
